«STS» (Network of Television Stations) is a Russian federal television channel that positions itself as a "classic entertainment channel." It belongs to the «STS Media» holding, which is owned by the Swedish media company «Modern Times Group» (MTG). The CEO since autumn 2008 is Vyacheslav Murugov. Previously, the channel's CEOs were Anton Kudryashov, Alexander Rodnyansky, and Roman Petrenko. The channel broadcasts a large number of films, TV series, cartoons, and entertainment shows.
Until 2007, STS mainly broadcast foreign series in prime time. With the arrival of such TV series as: «My Fair Nanny» and «Daddy's Daughters», STS gradually began to switch to domestically produced series. Soon, prime time was no longer occupied by imported series, but by Russian ones. Domestic TV series pushed Western ones to night and morning airtime. This category included TV series such as: «Grey's Anatomy», «Charmed», «Xena: Warrior Princess», «Lonely Hearts», «Smallville», «The Big Bang Theory» (premiere episodes are broadcast at 8:00) and «Body Parts».
Like many channels in the USA and other countries, STS does not deviate from its entertainment mission. Even during moments of nationwide crises, such as the hostage-taking in Beslan, when militants seized a school in southern Russia, and over 330 people died as a result of the shootout and explosions, Western media and even some Russian channels (mainly those with their own news) showed the culmination of the crisis live, while STS was broadcasting another episode of «Charmed», an American show about three modern witches. Only once (when there was a terrorist attack on Dubrovka on October 23-26, 2002) did STS air an emergency news bulletin with Andrey Norkin. STS is a 24/7 entertainment family channel.
