CBS News is reportedly planning to move its “CBS Mornings” show from its high-profile Times Square studio to the CBS Broadcast Center, according to The New York Post. The show, currently broadcasting from Studio 1515 in Times Square (1515 Broadway), will relocate to Studio 57, sharing space with “CBS Evening News.”

The decision is primarily driven by cost-cutting measures. Relocating from the satellite complex in the Paramount Global building will save money by reducing the number of active studios. CBS aims to consolidate management and operational roles, potentially lowering payroll expenses. Further cost reductions are expected from decreased studio maintenance and utility costs.

The move leverages existing infrastructure at the broadcast center, which can be shared among various programs. The vacated Times Square studio may be repurposed or rented out, generating additional revenue. The investment in an LED volume in Studio 57 when “CBS Evening News” relocated to New York from Washington, D.C., makes it suitable for “CBS Mornings.” The studio’s versatility allows for the creation of diverse looks using background graphics or virtual set extensions.

CBS Mornings” may retain its current look, including its skyline background, which could be replicated using the existing infrastructure. The show's use of multiple video walls for topical graphics can also continue. Even the studio floor design could be replicated using the LED floor tiles in Studio 57. Previous iterations of CBS morning shows, including “The Early Show” and earlier versions of “CBS This Morning,” were also based at the broadcast center.

The original move to the Times Square studio in 2021, which was initially used for 2020 election coverage, was somewhat perplexing. The studio's design limited the use of its Times Square views. Unlike competitors like “Good Morning America” and “Today,” “CBS Mornings” lacked direct ground-level access, restricting audience interaction.

“Good Morning America” is also planning to move from its Times Square location in 2025, highlighting a potential trend within the industry. The shift to the CBS Broadcast Center for “CBS Mornings” is a strategic response to optimizing costs and resources within the changing landscape of broadcast television. “Mornings” moved into Studio 1515 in 2021 when the show changed names from “CBS This Morning” to “CBS Mornings” and relaunched with some talent and other changes. According to Post sources, the change is largely being driven by the appeal of cost savings.
