Comcast's soon-to-be independent cable networks division, formerly known as SpinCo, has officially launched under the name Versant. Mark Lazarus, the CEO leading the new company, announced the name in a staff memo. Versant will house a portfolio of well-known channels including MSNBC, CNBC, USA Network, Oxygen, E!, SYFY, and Golf Channel.
The formal separation from Comcast is expected to conclude later this year. In his memo, Lazarus stated, “Versant represents more than a name — it speaks to our adaptability and embraces the opportunity to shape a new, modern media company.” The name, chosen after a lengthy selection process involving numerous options, was vetted internationally for legal and design considerations.
Brand marketers Lisa Fleming and Mike DeRienzo explained in a staff announcement that the name, referencing a mountain slope, evokes “strength” and “forward movement.” The company’s permanent headquarters will be in Manhattan, with a temporary office dubbed “summer camp.” Lazarus also noted significant interest in employment, with over 5,000 applicants and a careers website featuring 100+ open positions launching this week.
Post-spinoff, MSNBC will establish its own news division, independent from NBC News. Details regarding MSNBC's streaming strategy remain unannounced, although its content previously appeared on Peacock, a platform remaining with Comcast.
