G&L Geißendörfer & Leschinsky has developed a cutting-edge streaming platform designed for the European Parliament. This innovative system facilitates the seamless distribution of live and on-demand content in numerous languages, significantly improving the accessibility of parliamentary speeches and debates across Europe.
The Parliament required a solution offering high flexibility and scalability to meet its diverse multilingual streaming needs. Hundreds of staff members needed the capability to quickly clip live video from ongoing sessions and distribute these clips across various platforms in multiple languages. G&L’s solution is a modular hybrid infrastructure, integrating on-premises and multi-cloud technologies. This ensures high availability, scalability, and environmental sustainability.
The platform boasts impressive capabilities: live streaming with 30 video channels, each supporting up to 32 audio tracks, and content distribution via the Akamai Content Delivery Network. It can simultaneously stream to as many as 200 destinations, including key social media channels, maximizing the reach of parliamentary proceedings. Efficiency is a priority; the system utilizes energy-efficient encoders, leveraging ARM-based CPUs from Ampere and ASIC-accelerated hardware from NETINT for real-time transcoding.
Robust security is integral. The platform incorporates ISO 27001 certification, zero-trust identity management, and DDoS protection. The Kubernetes-based hybrid infrastructure provides flexible workload orchestration, while advanced analytics from Bitmovin and CMCD-enhanced CDN logs offer real-time insights into streaming performance and audience engagement. A long-term archiving system manages over 89,000 videos from 21,000 events, ensuring ongoing access to parliamentary records.
The platform's versatility is a key advantage. Live broadcasts are accessible on the Parliament's websites, offering up to 32 audio channels per stream. A seven-day ring buffer stores recent content. Social media teams can easily select and share specific segments in various languages during live events. For instance, one editor might stream a full debate in French on Facebook, while another shares a Spanish excerpt on LinkedIn, and a third posts a Latvian segment on X/Twitter—allowing up to 200 unique streaming configurations concurrently.
Members of Parliament can also clip and instantly share their speeches in their preferred language on social media or download them as MP4 files. This feature empowers direct communication with constituents, fostering greater engagement and transparency.
