After nearly two years of financial turmoil and a high-profile bankruptcy case, Diamond Sports Group has successfully reorganized, emerging as Main Street Sports Group, now operating under the FanDuel Sports Network brand. This significant reorganization, finalized last November, resolves one of the most significant challenges in the sports media industry.

The restructuring significantly reduced the company's liabilities. Previously burdened with nearly $9 billion in debt, the company now operates with only $200 million, a result of a court-approved restructuring plan. This plan garnered broad support from debt holders and led to crucial partnerships with Amazon’s Prime Video and FanDuel. David Preschlack, CEO of Main Street Sports Group, stated, “Emerging from this process is the culmination of over 20 months of incredibly hard work to transform our business and position us to better serve passionate local fans across our markets.”

The restructuring also impacted the group's portfolio. Its holdings of NBA, NHL, and MLB teams now total 29, fewer than in its Diamond Sports or Fox Sports days, but still representing a considerable presence in local sports broadcasting. The company aims to modernize its offerings via the FanDuel Sports Network branding, targeting both linear TV and direct-to-consumer platforms.

The original Diamond Sports Group, a Sinclair Broadcast Group subsidiary, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in March 2023. This reflected broader challenges facing the RSN model, struggling to adapt to streaming services and the decline of cable subscriptions. The company faced further issues including increasing sports rights costs and disputes with league partners. The bankruptcy process involved complex negotiations with major sports leagues and team owners, ultimately resulting in severed ties with Sinclair and restructured rights agreements.

Main Street Sports Group’s relaunch highlights a significant shift in the RSN business model. The FanDuel Sports Network branding links gambling and sports media, while the Amazon Prime Video partnership indicates a move towards hybrid distribution methods. These strategies aim to maintain relevance in a shifting media landscape where streaming is gaining popularity among younger audiences. Preschlack added, “With a stronger balance sheet, key partnerships and supportive new owners, we are modernizing our business to thrive in a changing media landscape.” The FanDuel Sports Network is now the broadcast home for 13 NBA teams, 8 NHL teams, and 8 MLB teams.
