The UK's communications regulator, Ofcom, has announced the finalization of its plans to ensure the prominence of public service broadcasters (PSBs) on connected TV platforms. Following a consultation period, Ofcom reports that stakeholders are “largely supportive” of its new online availability and prominence regime.
Initially proposed in December, these plans, now enshrined in the final Statement of Principles and Methods, will require designated connected TV platforms to guarantee easy access to services such as BBC iPlayer and other PSB players. The 2024 Media Act legally mandates this, placing obligations on manufacturers and operators of smart TVs, streaming sticks, and set-top boxes.
Ofcom's detailed document outlines its methodology for designating Television Selection Services (TSS). This designation will be based on the number of UK users and the usage patterns of a specific TSS. The regulator has clarified its approach in response to feedback received during the consultation process. The finalized rules aim to create a fairer and more accessible viewing experience for UK audiences, ensuring PSB content remains readily discoverable in the increasingly competitive connected TV landscape.
