German public broadcaster ZDF has significantly upgraded its media library, ZDFmediathek, transforming it into a fully-fledged streaming portal. This represents a departure from the previous structure, which was heavily reliant on the linear TV channel's logic. The new focus is firmly on the user, prioritizing individual interests and preferences.
The broadcaster highlights an improved navigation structure for more intuitive program discovery. Automated and algorithmically generated page types ensure a clear presentation of content. ZDF has also implemented extensive additional metadata, making content easier to find, categorize, and organize. These technical improvements, coupled with a contemporary design and user-friendly presentation, aim to create an intuitive user experience across all target groups. Accessibility features have also been prioritized.
The ZDF streaming portal is accessible on all major devices and is optimized for smart TV use. “With the launch of this service, ZDF is setting new standards for a modern, intuitive and inclusive streaming portal and, with its public service personalisation strategy, is providing a contemporary response to the increased demands of users. We are also laying the foundation for ‘Streaming OS’, our intensified collaboration with ARD,” said Florian Kumb, Head of the ZDF Audience Directorate.
This launch builds on previous innovations, notably the ‘One ZDF for all’ strategy, which expanded the range of content available for non-linear viewing. Through collaboration within the ARD/ZDF streaming network, content from ARD and other partners is accessible via the ZDF streaming portal. ZDF leverages its in-house expertise in automation and personalization, including its recommendation system. Future plans include adding discourse and participation options, aligning with ZDF’s involvement in the ‘Public Spaces Incubator’ project. Joint technology efforts with ARD, such as shared logins and players, are also underway, aiming to create cross-platform user profiles.
