Following the Trump administration’s decision to drastically reduce funding for the United States Agency for Global Media (USAGM), Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty (RFE/RL) faces an uncertain future. This move, justified by the White House as necessary to curb “radical propaganda,” has raised significant concerns about the future of independent journalism globally.
Czech Prime Minister Petr Fiala has issued a strong statement of support for the Prague-based broadcaster. In an interview, he emphasized RFE/RL’s vital role in countering misinformation spread by authoritarian regimes such as Russia and Iran. “We will do everything that we can to give them the chance to continue in this very important role,” Fiala stated, highlighting the broadcaster’s historical importance, especially during the Cold War.
Fiala’s personal experience with RFE/RL during his youth under communist rule underscores his commitment. He recalled relying on the broadcaster as a trusted source of uncensored news, a testament to its enduring legacy and continued relevance in today’s complex information landscape. The Czech government's commitment to ensuring the continued operation of RFE/RL sends a powerful message about the importance of independent media in a world increasingly challenged by disinformation.
