České Radiokomunikace (CRA) has initiated the next phase of its 5G Broadcast experimentation in Prague, with a focus on evaluating the technology's reception on readily available mobile devices such as smartphones and tablets. These trials, set to last a year, utilize the Prague City-Žižkov Television Tower for transmissions, operating at a power level equivalent to DVB-T2.

The primary goals of this phase encompass the verification of network configurations, assessment of coverage areas, confirmation of device compatibility, integration of 5G Broadcast with existing data networks, and ensuring seamless interoperability with mobile 5G within the 700MHz frequency band. CRA indicates positive advancements in handset readiness, specifically mentioning the Motorola Razr 50 Ultra and Edge 50 Ultra, which are poised to support 5G Broadcast reception after a software update.

“Broadcasting using 5G Broadcast technology appears to be very promising,” stated CRA CEO Miloš Mastník, emphasizing the technology's efficient use of spectrum, reduced energy consumption, and dependable service delivery during emergencies. “Broadcasting in 5G can bring viewers their favourite programmes to mobile phones or tablets without having to use mobile data, it is also more economical and environmentally friendly than existing technologies,” he added.

Parallel 5G Broadcast pilot programs are currently being conducted in several European countries, including France, Germany, Italy, Belgium, and Poland. CRA's current phase is designed to provide valuable insights that will inform upcoming decisions pertaining to service models and the potential for a full-scale commercial implementation.
