The secretive nature of the Papal Conclave traditionally keeps its inner workings hidden. However, this year, several major news networks turned to extended reality (XR) technology to give viewers a unique glimpse inside the Sistine Chapel.

NBC News and CNN both produced large-scale virtual recreations of the chapel, using them in explainer segments to illustrate the papal election process. Both incorporated floating panels with text detailing the proceedings. While strikingly similar—likely due to the chapel's well-documented interior—NBC's version had a richer visual quality. CNN's version distinguished itself by populating the virtual chapel with figures representing cardinals.

Both versions also incorporated exterior views of the building and Vatican City. CNN made more extensive use of the chapel's famed vaulted ceilings, employing wider shots to highlight the room's height and frescoes. The segments from both CNN and MSNBC appeared pre-produced, with no immediate indication of future live use.

CBS took a different approach. They utilized their virtual production spaces, inserting talent into a circular room frequently used for weather segments. Although not a complete virtual recreation, this setup allowed them to explain the process by incorporating imagery onto virtual walls and, in one instance, a map onto the floor.

The use of XR technology demonstrates an innovative approach to covering complex events. By offering viewers an immersive experience, these networks successfully brought the intricacies of the Papal Conclave to life.
