The French communications regulator, Arcom, has issued a formal notice to Eutelsat, demanding the cessation of broadcasts for the Russian channels STS and Kanal 5. This action stems from the European Union's sanctions, freezing the economic resources of JSC National Media Group, the channels' parent company. The move is a significant step in France's ongoing efforts to counter Russian disinformation.

This latest decision by Arcom is notable as it represents the first application of new powers granted in May 2024, designed to bolster the regulation and security of the digital sphere. Arcom's actions are not unprecedented; previously, the broadcasting of several other Russian channels, including NTV Mir, Rossiya 1, Perviy Kanal, and NTV, were halted. Arcom cited the dissemination of hate speech, violence, and demonstrably false information regarding the conflict in Ukraine as the justification for these earlier bans. The broadcasts of RT France were also terminated.

The ban on STS and Kanal 5 underscores the ongoing efforts by European nations to curb the spread of Russian propaganda and misinformation during the Ukraine conflict.
