KTVT, the CBS affiliate serving the Dallas–Fort Worth area, has transitioned its 11 a.m. newscast to its extended reality studio. This shift, which took place on Oct. 14, 2025, comes after the successful integration of the technology into weather and sports segments. According to a LinkedIn post by the station: “This new technology allows us to fully immerse our audience in the story, delivering news and weather with unprecedented depth and clarity. We’re committed to leading the future of local broadcasting.”
CBS has been actively introducing virtual and augmented reality functionalities throughout its local stations across the country. In September, CBS News Atlanta premiered with a completely virtual studio environment. Other CBS stations, like WCBS in New York and the CBS News 24/7 streaming service, have also incorporated virtual environments into their routine programming.
Beyond these endeavors, CBS shows such as “60 Minutes” and “CBS News Sunday Morning” have been utilizing green screen technology for particular segments for quite some time, generally in a more constrained manner. CBS has not yet announced if other newscasts at CBS News Texas will be moving to complete virtual production. Based on the network’s current approach, CBS News and Stations has developed a more comprehensive national network of augmented and virtual reality resources compared to other U.S. station groups, although comparable initiatives are being pursued elsewhere in the sector.
