Telus, a global leader in communications technology, has partnered with Broadpeak, a prominent provider of content delivery network (CDN) and video streaming solutions. They are implementing Broadpeak's Origin Packaging solution to significantly improve their video streaming capabilities.
This innovative solution, running on the Google Cloud Platform, allows Telus to streamline their infrastructure, leading to reduced costs. The high-performance origin packager ensures a superior viewing experience for subscribers. As Jacques Le Mancq, CEO at Broadpeak, explains, “With VOD evolving into a long-tail application, efficient CDN caching is more critical than ever. Without it, the demand for streaming from the origin increases, driving up costs.” He adds, “We’re thrilled that Telus is utilizing our high-performance origin packager to keep their infrastructure and operational expenses in check.”
Broadpeak's Origin Packager boasts a high-performance and scalable just-in-time packaging engine. This allows for efficient content library storage using a single format, minimizing storage requirements. The system expertly packages and encrypts live and VOD streaming content in prevalent ABR formats—including HLS and MPEG-DASH—and also records them for non-linear use cases such as time-shifting, start-over, catch-up, VOD, and cloud DVR. This is particularly beneficial for Telus, managing a substantial VOD library of approximately 150,000 assets.
The solution's efficiency is highlighted by its ability to minimize the number of software instances needed for packaging, directly impacting Telus's infrastructure costs. Furthermore, support for advanced features like VOD thumbnails enhances the overall viewer experience. Telus also leverages Broadpeak's 24/7 managed services for seamless deployment, operation, monitoring, and optimization of its video streaming service.
