CBS News and Stations have been actively incorporating augmented reality (AR) and virtual technology into their owned stations. This trend began in the summer of 2024 with the launch of “CBS News 24/7” and has since expanded to include stations like KCNC in September, following the unveiling of their new studio.
The implementation of AR and virtual technology mirrors similar efforts at KPIX in San Francisco and KYW in Philadelphia. As Jennifer Mitchell, president of CBS Television Stations, shared, "As we make decisions about building out new sets, about design, we are absolutely thinking about virtual versus a hundred percent hardscape." Mitchell further emphasized the learning opportunities derived from the KPIX team and their commitment to scaling these technologies.
The technical infrastructure behind these virtual environments relies on Zero Density’s Reality solution, leveraging rendering capabilities from the Unreal Engine and seamless integration with Chyron Prime.
At KCNC, the AR technology is currently being used for First Alert Weather broadcasts, enhancing the presentation of weather information. Eric Buckland, engineering manager at KCNC, highlighted the collaborative efforts between CBS Colorado and CBS News and Stations, underscoring their dedication to bringing these advanced technologies to local markets.
KCNC emphasizes the integration of the virtual studio into the First Alert Weather Center, complementing existing elements like First Alert Weather Trackers and the First Alert Weather Deck, which includes a snow board, wind meter, and rain gauge.
