BBC iPlayer has surged ahead of its rivals, demonstrating growth that is twice that of Netflix, three times ITVX and four times that of Channel 4. The number of users accessing iPlayer has increased by 10% compared to the same period in 2024.
A summer packed with live events, including Euro 2024, the Olympics and Glastonbury, generated over 350 million requests. "Our digital transformation strategy is working. The BBC has grown market share, gaining against the global streamers as well as our UK competitors. BBC iPlayer has had another record-breaking year and its incredible growth story is a clear signal that we are offering audiences uniquely British content they really value," stated the BBC’s Chief Content Officer Charlotte Moore.
BBC iPlayer has benefited from the output of its domestic channels, which have delivered popular shows including The Apprentice, Race Across the World, Doctor Who, EastEnders and The Jetty. Last year, the BBC invested more in British content than any other commissioner, allocating £1 billion to original TV content. Furthermore, the BBC committed over 60% of its TV budget to productions outside of London, supporting more UK TV production companies and suppliers than any other organization. In 2024, this support extended to a total of 326 companies.
