Amazon has launched a groundbreaking augmented-reality/data-enhanced broadcast mode, Amazon Prime Vision, for its live sports coverage. The system debuted in the UK during a Champions League match between Tottenham and Villarreal.
This innovative technology adds real-time statistics, graphics, and AR-style visualizations directly onto the live match feed. Viewers gain access to a wealth of data, including player names, sprint speeds, pass distances, ball speeds, expected goals (xG) metrics, live positioning maps, and momentum indicators. The visuals are reminiscent of video games, appealing to younger audiences and those who appreciate data-driven insights.
The overlays highlight tactical plays and passing options, providing insights typically reserved for post-match analysis. Amazon leverages camera/sensor systems, similar to those used in NFL Next Gen Stats, to power this technology. The goal is to provide a deeper, more engaging viewing experience, particularly for fans interested in statistics and tactical nuances. Amazon previously offered a similar service for NFL games in the United States, earning an Emmy in 2023. Plans are underway to expand Prime Vision to Germany and Italy.
