In a major blow to digital piracy, Argentine authorities have arrested the alleged founder of Al Ángulo TV, an illegal sports streaming platform with significant reach across Latin America. The suspect, known as "Shishi," was apprehended at his residence in Paraná, Entre Ríos. A raid uncovered a sophisticated technological setup used to operate the piracy network.
The operation, overseen by Judge Esteban Eduardo Rossignoli of the Juzgado de Garantías 4 de San Isidro, involved the Argentine Federal Police and Buenos Aires Provincial Police, working with the Specialized Prosecutor’s Office for Cybercrime (UFEIC). Al Ángulo TV illegally streamed football matches and Formula 1 events, utilizing 14 mirror domains to distribute stolen content. Recently, they launched an Android app, attracting tens of thousands of users.
The platform generated revenue through informal advertising, exposing users to malware and data theft risks. Profits were channeled through cryptocurrency wallets, subsequently seized during the raid. The investigation received crucial support from ALIANZA, the Alliance Against Audiovisual Piracy, and La Liga, the Spanish football league. Their data proved instrumental in identifying the infrastructure and tracing the digital footprint of the operation. “Shishi” maintained a prominent online presence, boasting over 100,000 followers and proclaiming his “untouchability”. His arrest serves as a powerful statement—even the most elusive digital pirates can be apprehended.
