Blackmagic Design has opened pre-orders for its revolutionary Blackmagic Ursa Cine Immersive camera, the first commercially available system designed to capture Apple Immersive Video for the Apple Vision Pro. Shipments are expected to begin in early 2025.
The upcoming update to DaVinci Resolve Studio will provide essential editing support for Apple Immersive Video, giving professionals a complete workflow. Apple Immersive Video is a 180-degree format using ultra-high-resolution video and Spatial Audio for an unparalleled viewer experience. “We are excited to begin accepting pre-orders for the new Blackmagic Ursa Cine Immersive camera and preview a true end-to-end workflow for Apple Immersive Video with DaVinci Resolve,” stated Grant Petty, Blackmagic Design CEO. “We are looking forward to working closely with filmmakers and production companies on the Blackmagic production workflow for Apple Immersive Video before releasing the camera to a wider audience later in 2025. We can’t wait to see the amazing action, drama, concerts, sports and other incredible experiences our customers will capture in this powerful new format pioneered by Apple.”
The Ursa Cine Immersive boasts a built-in, custom lens system optimized for Apple Immersive Video. Its sensor delivers an impressive 8160 x 7200 resolution per eye, 16 stops of dynamic range, and pixel-level synchronization, enabling the capture of 90fps 3D immersive cinema content to a single file. The lens system’s precise positional data, calibrated and stored during manufacturing, is embedded within the Blackmagic RAW file throughout post-production.
A new DaVinci Resolve Studio version, launching in Q1 2025, includes tools for editing, color grading, and producing Apple Immersive Video. This includes a new immersive video viewer allowing panning, tilting, and rolling of clips for 2D or Apple Vision Pro viewing. FCP XML metadata enables bypassing Apple Vision Pro transitions for clean master files, and export presets streamline output for direct Apple Vision Pro viewing.
The Ursa Cine platform uses a robust magnesium alloy chassis and carbon fiber polycarbonate composite skin. Connectivity includes 12G-SDI, 10G Ethernet, USB-C, and XLR audio. It features a 5″ HDR touchscreen and a second 5″ HDR touchscreen assist station. Powering is handled via an 8-pin Lemo connector compatible with 24V and 12V supplies. The Ursa Cine Immersive includes a 250W power supply, a B-mount battery plate, top handle, antennas, baseplate, and a 24V power supply.
With 8TB of built-in storage, the camera records directly to the Blackmagic Media Module, syncing to Blackmagic Cloud and DaVinci Resolve bins in real time. It supports recording over 2 hours of 8K stereoscopic 3D immersive Blackmagic RAW. The new Blackmagic RAW Immersive file format simplifies immersive video post-production, including support for Blackmagic global media sync and metadata storage. The camera also creates H.264 proxies for quick cloud uploads.
The Blackmagic Media Dock enhances post-production by providing high-speed access to media from multiple cameras. Four 10G Ethernet ports support multiple edit workstations. The Blackmagic Ursa Cine Immersive is available for pre-order at $29,995 (US), with deliveries starting in late Q1 2025.
