The Austrian Bundesliga broadcasting rights are up for grabs, with a significant contender emerging in the form of French pay-TV network Canal+. According to reports in Austrian newspaper Der Standard, Canal+ has submitted a bid for the rights, though neither party has officially confirmed the news.
The current contract with Sky Austria concludes at the end of the 2025/26 season. In an interview with Laola1, Canal+’s Head of Sports, Thomas Trukesitz, stated: “There have already been two meetings with the Bundesliga. It’s no secret that we are taking a close look at this.”
Sky Austria is expected to participate in the bidding to retain its coverage. Other potential bidders include public broadcaster ORF and commercial channel Servus TV, although their intentions are yet to be made public. Canal+’s interest is part of a broader strategy to expand its footprint in the Austrian sports market. The network already holds rights to certain UEFA Champions League, Europa League, and Conference League matches.
The Bundesliga is simultaneously exploring a self-production model, dubbed “Plan A,” to enhance revenue and modernize its media strategy. This would see the league directly manage production and distribution, potentially through a partnership with established broadcasters.
Canal+’s involvement promises a significant shift in the Austrian sports media landscape, foreshadowing a period of intensified competition and potential changes in how the league is presented to viewers.
