CBS News has announced a significant change in leadership for its flagship evening news program. Longtime producer Kim Harvey has been promoted to executive producer of the “CBS Evening News,” succeeding Guy Campanile. Campanile is returning to his previous role at “60 Minutes.” His departure, rumored for weeks, follows a period of uncertainty at CBS News.

Reports suggest that co-anchor changes may also be forthcoming, although no official announcements have been made regarding John Dickerson or Maurice DuBois. The exact direction Harvey will take with the broadcast remains unclear, though internal sources suggest that Campanile's disagreements with Tom Cibrowski, the head of CBS News’ news division, may have contributed to the changes.

The changes occur against a backdrop of significant upheaval at CBS News and its parent company. The August 2025 acquisition of Paramount Global by Skydance Media has created uncertainty, with widespread speculation about layoffs and leadership changes throughout the company. The “CBS Evening News” itself has faced challenges, including a poorly received January 2025 overhaul that shifted towards long-form storytelling. This approach, influenced by Campanile’s experience at “60 Minutes,” ultimately failed to improve ratings, leaving the broadcast consistently in third place behind ABC and NBC.

Further instability has affected CBS News in recent years, including the departure of Norah O’Donnell in early 2025 and the relocation of the broadcast back to New York from Washington, D.C. Additionally, both CBS News president Adrienne Roark and CBS News and Stations president Wendy McMahon left the company within a short timeframe. The Paramount-Skydance deal has also triggered substantial changes within the network's C-suite, adding to the ongoing pressures faced by the news division. The network is also navigating the fallout from a $16 million settlement of a lawsuit filed by Donald Trump, which has been widely criticized as lacking merit.
