CBS Stations has unveiled its eighth augmented reality studio, located at KTVT in the Dallas–Ft. Worth, Texas, market. This impressive 20,384 cubic foot studio will enable the station to deliver engaging extended reality segments to its viewers, with a primary focus on weather presentations.
KTVT is slated to debut the new studio on June 23, 2025, with chief meteorologist McKenna King presenting the station's inaugural immersive weather forecast. “The launch in Texas further underscores our commitment to investing in the future of local journalism,” stated Jennifer Mitchell, president of CBS Stations, and CBS News and Stations Digital. “Through the expansion of our technological capabilities, we continue to deepen how we serve our communities, elevate the viewer experience and shape the future of broadcast journalism.”
Raquel Amparo, president and general manager of CBS Texas, added, “Over the past year, we’ve evolved every part of our newsroom – from refreshing our newscasts, updating our brand and building a multiplatform coverage strategy. This technology is the next chapter and allows us to enhance meaningful content for everyone we serve.”
This latest launch builds upon the successful implementation of similar studios in New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Philadelphia, the Bay Area, Denver, and Miami. Several stations have also utilized these studios for “Center Court,” a virtual set specifically designed for March Madness coverage. Furthermore, KPIX in San Francisco leverages the technology to produce “CBS News 24/7 Prime Time” for the network’s streaming platform, CBS News 24/7.
The stations, and the streamer, frequently share similar 3D environments, enabling the group to maximize its investments. These setups also benefit from shared technology stacks.
