Equatys, the U.S.-based joint venture between Viasat and Emirati satellite operator Space42, focused on shared space infrastructure for direct-to-device (D2D) services, has announced its first mobile network partner as it seeks to compete with SpaceX in this rapidly evolving market. On October 14, the companies revealed that the telecoms division of the United Arab Emirates' e& has signed a Memorandum of Understanding. The goal is to explore how their planned space-based service could connect devices beyond the reach of terrestrial infrastructure within the next three years.

The collaboration will focus on four primary areas, including a "Sovereignty-friendly alternative". Announced in September, Equatys aims to combine more than 100 megahertz (MHz) of harmonized Mobile Satellite Spectrum (MSS) already allocated across over 160 countries. The companies emphasize that their multi-tenant “space tower” model is designed to offer cost and efficiency advantages similar to those found in shared cellular tower infrastructure. Furthermore, Equatys is being positioned as a "sovereignty-friendly" option compared to SpaceX, with executives highlighting its commitment to working within existing national spectrum allocations. This approach would give governments greater control over compliance and licensing.

SpaceX's recent acquisition of wireless spectrum and MSS licenses from EchoStar, valued at over $17 billion, underscores the company's growing influence. This deal would grant SpaceX direct ownership of globally cleared spectrum, reducing its reliance on cellular partners for enabling limited text and data services in the U.S., New Zealand, and Japan. AST SpaceMobile, another D2D competitor based in Texas, claims to have over 50 mobile partnerships globally, including AT&T and Verizon in the U.S. AST is also actively accumulating MSS spectrum. The company has launched five commercial satellites but requires many more to provide continuous broadband coverage and secure regulatory approval for commercial services. In a separate announcement on October 14, Space42 and e& also disclosed their collaboration on vehicle technologies to advance autonomous mobility and smart-city infrastructure across the UAE.
