Eutelsat Group and Swiss public broadcaster SSR SRG have solidified their long-term relationship with a multi-year renewal of their satellite capacity agreement. This agreement utilizes Eutelsat’s Hotbird position (13° East), a partnership spanning more than three decades. The renewed contract guarantees the uninterrupted transmission of SRG’s high-definition television channels and radio stations to viewers throughout Switzerland and beyond.
Among the channels included in this agreement are prominent Swiss broadcasters such as RTS 1, RTS 2, SRF 1, SRF 2, SRF info, RSI La 1, and RSI La 2. The Hotbird satellites, situated at 13° East, provide coverage to over 130 million television households across Europe. With more than 90% cable and IPTV penetration in Europe, this ensures widespread accessibility. The satellites also extend their reach to the MENA region.
Satellite technology proves invaluable in the Swiss landscape, offering a practical alternative to costly and disruptive terrestrial infrastructure projects. Laying fibre optic cables through Switzerland's mountainous terrain presents significant challenges. Satellites provide a cost-effective and efficient solution, particularly for reaching remote and less accessible areas within the country. “We are honoured that SRG SSR, Switzerland’s public broadcaster, is continuing to rely on Eutelsat to deliver its leading entertainment offering to millions of homes across Switzerland and further afield. This new agreement enables audiences to continue receiving their favourite channels, no matter how remote their location, and highlights the crucial role satellite continues to play in connecting communities and delivering essential services,” said Aymeric Genty, President of Eutelsat’s Video Business Unit.
