KTVT, the CBS affiliate serving the Dallas–Fort Worth area, has transitioned its 11 a.m. newscast to its extended reality studio. The shift, which took place on Oct. 14, 2025, builds upon the station's earlier use of the technology for weather and sports reporting.
“This new technology allows us to fully immerse our audience in the story, delivering news and weather with unprecedented depth and clarity. We’re committed to leading the future of local broadcasting,” the station shared on LinkedIn.
CBS has actively been incorporating virtual and augmented reality capabilities across its local stations across the country. CBS News Atlanta, for instance, launched in September with a fully virtual studio setup. Additional CBS stations, like WCBS in New York and the CBS News 24/7 streaming service, have also included virtual environments into their regular programming.
Furthermore, CBS programs such as “60 Minutes” and “CBS News Sunday Morning” have utilized green screen technology for specific segments for a considerable time, usually in a more restricted manner.
CBS has not yet made public any plans regarding the transition of additional newscasts at CBS News Texas to full virtual production. Based on the network’s current plans, CBS News and Stations has developed a national network of augmented and virtual reality facilities more extensively than other U.S. station groups, although similar efforts are being pursued elsewhere in the industry.
