A significant wildfire, the Eaton fire, poses a serious threat to numerous broadcast antennas located atop Mt. Wilson in Los Angeles. These antennas serve major networks including KNBC (NBC), KABC (ABC), KCBS (CBS), KCAL (Independent owned by CBS), KTTV (Fox), KTLA (The CW), KOCE (PBS), and KMEX (Univision), along with various radio stations and communication equipment.
The fire's proximity to the antennas, situated in an area accessible via Mt. Wilson Circle Road and streets such as Video Road, Audio Road, and Weathervane Drive, raises concerns about potential damage and disruption. If the fire reaches the transmission sites, the antennas may be forced offline due to safety concerns, or the facilities could sustain significant damage from the flames.
Power disruptions also pose a threat to the antennas' operation. While backup generators likely exist, their effectiveness could be compromised by the proximity of the fire. The impact will primarily affect over-the-air signals; however, cable, satellite, and streaming services are expected to remain largely unaffected, with any disruptions likely short-lived.
Most stations have implemented contingency plans, including the possibility of temporary operations from remote locations, ensuring continued news coverage. Several stations are already providing comprehensive coverage of the wildfires, aiding in keeping residents informed and safe. The image courtesy of Google Maps illustrates the location.
