The Dutch Data Protection Authority (DPA) has imposed a €4.75 million fine on Netflix, concluding a five-year investigation into its data practices. The investigation focused on the period between 2018 and 2020, during which the DPA determined that Netflix failed to adequately inform its customers about how their personal data was handled.
The DPA's statement highlighted that Netflix provided insufficient and unclear information to its customers. Dutch DPA chairman Aleid Wolfsen stated: ‘A company like that, with a turnover of billions and millions of customers worldwide, has to explain properly to its customers how it handles their personal data. That must be crystal clear. Especially if the customer asks about this. And that was not in order.’
Following the investigation, Netflix has reportedly updated its privacy statement and enhanced its information provision. This significant fine underscores the importance of transparent data handling practices for large corporations, particularly concerning the management of consumer data. The decision serves as a reminder of the need for clear and easily understandable information regarding the use of personal data.
