Network 10 has officially opened its state-of-the-art virtual production studio, Studio 1A, located in Melbourne. This innovative space combines a large chromakey area with advanced virtual production software, along with automated camera systems and graphics powered by the Unreal Engine.
According to Martin White, vice president of news at Network 10, this technological advancement supports the network's increasing audience. "Our local 5pm bulletin is up 9% year-on-year across all markets, and we know how important the Melbourne market is," White stated. "Victorians love local news, so I’m thrilled we’re able to give them an unparalleled, immersive local news, sport and weather experience with this new technology."
The studio's automated camera systems are designed to operate remotely and seamlessly integrate with the graphics platform, enabling intricate visual effects during live broadcasts. This approach facilitates camera movements and scene transitions that would typically require significant resources or be unachievable with traditional studio setups.
Network 10 has designed the facility to be adaptable to various program formats, encompassing everything from standard news broadcasts to special live events. This strategic move is reminiscent of CBS News in the U.S., which has made substantial investments in virtual production for its local affiliates and its streaming service, CBS News 24/7.
White emphasized that this studio is "just a first step" in the network’s broader technology development roadmap. However, the company has not yet revealed specific details concerning future investments or the potential expansion of virtual production capabilities to other markets.
