Network 10 has officially opened its new virtual production studio in Melbourne. Christened Studio 1A, the innovative space combines a spacious chromakey area with advanced virtual production software. The studio also features automated cameras and high-end graphics powered by the Unreal Engine.
Martin White, vice president of news at Network 10, emphasized the role of the new technology in supporting the network's growing audience. "Our local 5pm bulletin is up 9% year-on-year across all markets, and we know how important the Melbourne market is," White stated. "Victorians love local news, so I’m thrilled we’re able to give them an unparalleled, immersive local news, sport and weather experience with this new technology."
The studio’s automated camera systems offer remote operation and seamlessly integrate with the graphics platform, enabling the creation of intricate effects during live broadcasts. This facilitates camera movements and scene changes that would be challenging or require more personnel with conventional studio setups.
Network 10 engineered Studio 1A to support a wide range of programming, from daily news broadcasts to special events. This initiative mirrors the strategy of its U.S. affiliate, CBS News, which has made significant investments in virtual production for its local stations and its streaming service, CBS News 24/7.
White described the studio as "just a first step" in the network's ongoing technological development. While further details remain undisclosed, the company has hinted at future investments and potential expansions of its virtual production capabilities to other markets.
