Paramount, the US media giant, is preparing for a substantial retreat from the traditional linear television landscape. Numerous MTV channels across Europe are slated for closure by the conclusion of 2025. Citing a BBC report, the shutdown includes MTV Music, MTV 80s, MTV 90s, Club MTV, and MTV Live in the UK, all set to cease broadcasting on December 31, 2025. The main MTV channel (MTV HD), now primarily featuring reality and entertainment content, will remain active.
This strategic decision reflects a sustained decrease in viewership for linear music channels, as audiences increasingly gravitate towards platforms like YouTube and TikTok for their music video consumption. Industry analysts point out that these UK closures are part of a larger strategic shift within Paramount’s global holdings. In various Central and Eastern European countries, including Poland and Hungary, MTV music channels, TeenNick, NickMusic, Comedy Central Extra, and Paramount Network are expected to close at the end of 2025.
Similar reports have surfaced from the Benelux region, indicating that local versions of MTV 80s, MTV 00s, and other thematic channels are also facing discontinuation. According to affected TV platform operators speaking with Broadband TV News, MTV's parent company will also shutter MTV-branded channels in Germany and Austria. In Germany, one operator has already notified its B2B clients about the cessation of MTV Live HD on its platform and across the country at the close of the year. When approached by Broadband TV News, both Paramount’s German and the international press departments declined to comment.
