The second quarter of 2024 witnessed a substantial expansion of content libraries among leading streaming services. According to data from Gracenote, these platforms increased their combined offerings of TV shows, movies, and sports titles by 5%, representing approximately 4,500 new additions between February and May. This growth reflects a continuing trend of investment in programming by major players in the Subscription Video on Demand (SVOD) market.

Netflix significantly outperformed its competitors, demonstrating an impressive 18.2% increase in its catalogue. Other notable gains included Apple TV+ (3.7%), Amazon Prime Video (3.2%), Disney+ (1.6%), and Paramount+ (1%). This expansion resulted in Netflix commanding 20.1% of the total available TV shows, movies, and sports content on major streaming platforms, a rise from 17.9% in the previous quarter.

Within this overall growth, sports content experienced a particularly strong surge, expanding by 7.8% across the five leading SVOD services. This rate was nearly double the growth observed in movies and slightly exceeded the expansion rate of TV programming. Amazon Prime Video, Disney+, and Netflix emerged as the dominant players in the streaming sports market, together accounting for 92% of available streaming sports programming.

The growth in other content categories was also noteworthy. TV programs saw an increase of 6.9%, while movies experienced a 4% rise. Bill Michels, Chief Product Officer at Gracenote, commented: “In the big picture for SVOD, overall content volume continues to rise but the CTV apps making this content available continually shift. Regardless of programme type or any other attribute, effective content discovery helps streamers connect viewers to the entertainment they’ll enjoy most and get the most value out of each of the assets in their catalogues.”
