Facing difficulties in the competitive commercial launch industry, ABL Space has undergone a significant transformation. The company, established in 2017, initially aimed to revolutionize the small satellite launch market with its RS1 rocket. However, after encountering setbacks including two failed orbital launch attempts, ABL has made a strategic decision to pivot towards the defense sector.
On February 19th, founder and CEO Dan Piemont announced a rebranding to Long Wall. This new identity reflects the company's shift in focus to developing containerized missile defense systems and target rockets for the U.S. military. The name, inspired by ancient Athenian defensive structures, symbolizes the company's new mission. Piemont highlighted the Department of Defense's need for cost-effective solutions for hypersonic flight testing and missile defense, stating: "The Defense Department has made clear its need for more cost-effective solutions for hypersonic flight testing and missile defense."
Long Wall's strategy involves repurposing the RS1 rocket as a target vehicle for military testing, simulating incoming threats in live-fire exercises or testing advanced missile interceptors. While Long Wall hasn't yet announced any contracts, this move reflects a growing trend among space startups seeking opportunities within the defense industry, driven by increased geopolitical tensions and Pentagon investment in hypersonic and missile defense technologies. This transition is expected to offer lucrative prospects for the company.
