President Donald Trump has officially appointed Brendan Carr as the new chairman of the Federal Communications Commission (FCC).

Carr’s appointment bypasses Senate confirmation, as he is already a serving commissioner. Trump first floated Carr’s name as a potential FCC chairman in November 2024, shortly after the election.

In a statement, Carr expressed his gratitude: “I am deeply grateful to… Trump and honored by his decision to designate me as chairman… I am humbled by the opportunity to lead the FCC.”

Trump has described Carr as a champion of free speech. Carr is expected to prioritize tech and media regulation, focusing on initiatives to create jobs and stimulate economic growth through FCC actions related to spectrum allocation, infrastructure development, and the space economy.

Carr’s background is in law.
