The Digital Video Broadcasting (DVB) organization has announced the release of new guidelines designed to bolster accessibility features within DVB-I services. Detailed in DVB BlueBook A185, these guidelines outline the methods for signaling accessibility services within the DVB-I framework. This improved signaling will significantly enhance support for crucial features such as subtitles, audio description, and sign language interpretation.
DVB-I, an internet-centric standard, provides a mechanism for signaling and discovering television services regardless of their delivery method (IP or broadcast networks). The gathered information is then typically displayed to viewers via an Electronic Program Guide (EPG).
A dedicated task force, operating within the DVB-I technical working group, has developed a comprehensive accessibility metadata model. This model encompasses all currently utilized accessibility types. Content providers can leverage this model to enrich the signaling of their content, thereby enabling DVB-I-enabled devices to personalize the user experience based on individual viewer needs.
This initiative holds particular significance in light of the impending enforcement of the European Accessibility Act in June 2025. This act mandates accessible access to audiovisual media content. The new guidelines from DVB provide broadcasters, platforms, and device manufacturers with a clear roadmap for compliance with these regulations.
