NHK, Japan's public broadcaster, is projecting a third consecutive year of financial losses. Its budget for 2025, released on Wednesday, reveals an expected deficit of ¥40 billion for the fiscal year beginning in April. This represents a decrease from the ¥57 billion deficit recorded in 2024. The broadcaster plans to offset this deficit by utilizing its reserves.
To achieve financial stability, NHK has outlined a series of reforms targeting parity by 2027. These plans follow revisions to its business strategy for 2024-2026, necessitated by new legislation mandating online content availability from 2025. The 2025 budget allocates ¥18 billion for online distribution, a figure below a suggested ceiling of ¥20 billion. An additional ¥2.9 billion is earmarked for application development.
