Virgin Media Ireland has announced the launch of the country’s first 5-gigabit fibre broadband service in Q2 2025. The Liberty Global operator says its fibre infrastructure will transform broadband capabilities for homes and businesses, enabling seamless ultra-fast streaming, lag-free gaming, and instant access to cloud services.

Recent research commissioned by Virgin Media Ireland underlines the growing importance of high-speed broadband to consumers. Seventy percent of respondents felt that 5 gig speeds would be relevant to them and that lightning-fast broadband was important to their needs.

T. Paul Higgins, Virgin Media’s Vice President of Consumer, said: “Today is a natural next step within our €200m investment programme, bringing fibre to our entire network and opening up our products and services to customers nationwide. “This increase is driven by the acceleration of the connected consumer with Smart TV adoption increasing by 24% over the last four years, podcast streaming up by 38% and live streaming of sports up by 51%, all driven by the number of connected devices in our homes continuing to rise year-on-year. With this rapid increase of in-home consumption coinciding with a four-fold increase in remote and hybrid roles within the workforce, our homes have evolved into our offices, our cinemas, our gyms and our centres of entertainment.”

The launch of Ireland’s first 5-gigabit fibre broadband service will see broadband speeds pushing nearly 50 times faster than the current average.
