CNN is reportedly preparing to announce the layoff of several hundred employees on Thursday, according to US media outlets. This action is part of a larger plan to reduce production costs and accelerate the transition to digital products.
To lower expenses, Warner Bros. Discovery, which owns CNN, may consolidate its Washington and New York productions at its Atlanta headquarters. This strategic move aims to streamline operations and reduce overhead.
In October, CNN introduced a monthly subscription fee of $3.99 for unlimited access to its news website. This "small recurring fee," targeted at US users, reflects a broader industry trend towards monetizing online content.
Separately, NBC News, owned by Comcast, is also anticipating more limited layoffs, with estimates suggesting around 50 job cuts. The news industry in the United States is facing considerable challenges, with other prominent organizations like The Washington Post and Associated Press having recently announced staff reductions.
