The German market for pay-TV and paid video content is on a positive trajectory. In 2023, revenues for pay-TV and paid video-on-demand in Germany increased by 8.8% to €5.4 billion. The VAUNET, the German commercial broadcaster association, forecasts a further increase in total revenue of approximately 5% to €5.6 billion in 2024.
The DACH region, encompassing Germany, Austria, and German-speaking Switzerland, also exhibits sustained growth. In 2023, total revenues in the German-speaking countries reached €6.3 billion, exceeding the €6 billion mark for the first time. VAUNET anticipates continued growth of around 5% in 2024, reaching a total of €6.7 billion in the DACH region, barring any external negative factors. These are the key findings of the study "Pay-TV & Paid VOD in Germany 2023/2024," presented today in Berlin by VAUNET. According to the report, the number of pay-TV subscriptions in Germany climbed to 11.2 million in 2023 (2022: 10.1 million), while AGF-licensed pay-TV channels achieved an average monthly reach of 18.7 million viewers. VAUNET projects a new peak of 11.6 million pay-TV subscriptions in Germany for 2024. The number of SVOD subscribers in Germany surged to 21.1 million in 2023, surpassing the 20 million mark for the first time. The forecast anticipates a further rise in SVOD subscriber numbers to 22.2 million in 2024.
