Blackmagic Design has announced that pre-orders are now open for the groundbreaking Blackmagic Ursa Cine Immersive camera. This innovative camera system is specifically designed to capture Apple Immersive Video for the Apple Vision Pro headset, with deliveries slated to begin in early 2025.
The announcement also includes news of an upcoming DaVinci Resolve Studio update. This update, expected early next year, will offer professional filmmakers a complete end-to-end workflow for producing Apple Immersive Video. Apple Immersive Video is a remarkable 180-degree media format utilizing ultra-high-resolution immersive video and Spatial Audio to fully immerse viewers in the action. “We are excited to begin accepting pre-orders for the new Blackmagic Ursa Cine Immersive camera and preview a true end-to-end workflow for Apple Immersive Video with DaVinci Resolve,” said Grant Petty, Blackmagic Design CEO. “We are looking forward to working closely with filmmakers and production companies on the Blackmagic production workflow for Apple Immersive Video before releasing the camera to a wider audience later in 2025. We can’t wait to see the amazing action, drama, concerts, sports and other incredible experiences our customers will capture in this powerful new format pioneered by Apple.”
The Blackmagic Ursa Cine Immersive boasts a fixed, custom lens system pre-installed, perfectly optimized for capturing Apple Immersive Video. The sensor delivers an impressive 8160 x 7200 resolution per eye, with pixel-level synchronization and a remarkable 16 stops of dynamic range, allowing cinematographers to shoot 90fps 3D immersive cinema content to a single file. This custom lens system is designed for the Ursa Cine’s large format image sensor, ensuring extremely accurate positional data that’s read and stored during manufacturing. This immersive lens projection data — calibrated and stored on the device — travels through post-production within the Blackmagic RAW file.
A new version of DaVinci Resolve Studio, launching in Q1 of next year, will include powerful features for editing, color grading, and producing Apple Immersive Video. Key features include a new immersive video viewer, enabling editors to pan, tilt, and roll clips for viewing on 2D monitors or directly on the Apple Vision Pro. Additionally, transitions rendered by Apple Vision Pro can be bypassed using FCP XML metadata, providing editors with clean master files. Export presets will allow for quick output directly viewable on Apple Vision Pro.
The Blackmagic Ursa Cine camera platform is known for its robust design, featuring a magnesium alloy chassis and lightweight carbon fiber polycarbonate composite skin. It includes 12G-SDI out, 10G Ethernet, USB-C, XLR audio, and more. The foldable monitor features a large 5″ HDR touchscreen and an external color status LCD. A dedicated assist station with a second 5″ HDR touchscreen on the right side of the camera allows crew members to work efficiently without external monitors. Powering the camera is easy thanks to an 8-pin Lemo power connector compatible with 24V and 12V power supplies. The Blackmagic Ursa Cine Immersive includes a 250W power supply and a B-mount battery plate, compatible with various high-voltage batteries.
The camera features built-in 8TB of high-performance network storage, recording directly to the included Blackmagic Media Module and syncing to Blackmagic Cloud and DaVinci Resolve media bins in real time. This enables the capture of over 2 hours of Blackmagic RAW in 8K stereoscopic 3D immersive video. The new Blackmagic RAW Immersive file format simplifies working with immersive video, including support for Blackmagic global media sync. These files store crucial metadata for consistent image quality throughout post-production.
The Blackmagic Ursa Cine Immersive incorporates ultra-fast Cloud Store technology, enabling high-resolution recording and real-time access to files via 10G Ethernet. It also supports creating H.264 proxy files for quick cloud uploads. The Blackmagic Media Dock further enhances the post-production workflow, allowing high-speed access to media from multiple cameras. The Blackmagic Ursa Cine Immersive is available for pre-order at $29,995 (US), with deliveries beginning in late Q1 2025.
