Media Broadcast, the operator of the German DTT platform Freenet TV, has partnered with Irdeto and Twise to introduce a groundbreaking new Freenet TV USB 2.0 stick. This miniature device is designed to significantly simplify digital terrestrial television (DTT) reception utilizing CI Plus 2.0 technology. A key innovation is its compact form factor, replacing the older PCMCIA design with the widely adopted USB interface.
The USB conditional access module, once plugged into a compatible TV’s USB port, decrypts encrypted TV signals. Users retain full control over channels, volume, and other functions via their existing TV remote. Power consumption is remarkably lower—up to ten times less than traditional set-top boxes—offering both environmental and cost benefits. The reduced number of components compared to PCMCIA CAMs contributes to a smaller carbon footprint and less electronic waste.
Several TV manufacturers, including Hisense, LG, Vestel, and TPV, have already integrated the CI Plus 2.0 standard. A phased rollout across Europe and other regions is anticipated for 2025, facilitating a smooth transition away from the older PCMCIA port interface. The device’s software is a product of collaborative efforts between Freenet TV, security software developer Twise, and encryption technology provider Irdeto.
“We are excited to expand our device portfolio with the innovative USB2.0 stick, offering customers a new, future-proof reception device. Our successful collaboration with Twise and Irdeto has made this possible. We are also actively engaging with all major TV manufacturers to accelerate the market adoption of this cutting-edge interface, bringing this new technology to as many households as possible,” said Alicia Hellpoldt, Head of Freenet TV.
Stéphanie Bizouerne, Twise Co-Founder, added: “Twise is extremely proud of this CI Plus 2.0 USB CAM deployment together with Media Broadcast and Irdeto. This is the result of a strong cooperation for many years between the three parties.”
