Mo-Sys Engineering, a leader in Virtual Production (VP) technology, is pushing the boundaries of realism. Their new ‘Scan-to-Shoot’ location scanning workflow is making high-quality VP accessible to independent producers and in-house teams. This innovative approach uses hybrid scanning processes, capturing environmental data quickly and efficiently.

A collaboration with Studio X Beyond, a Thailand-based VP studio, showcased the workflow's capabilities. London location data was scanned and transferred to Bangkok for a rapid turnaround project. The entire process, from concept to delivery, was completed in record time. The scan took under 10 minutes, and filming was completed in a single day—a significant cost saving compared to on-location filming.

This intercontinental collaboration will be featured at the NAB Show in Las Vegas. The ‘Scan-to-Shoot’ workflow combines lidar and 3D Gaussian Splatting (3DGS) location scanning with Mo-Sys’ VP Pro software and Mo-Sys XR Set Extensions. It allows filmmakers to seamlessly move cameras between the LED wall and the virtual environment, creating dynamic and engaging shots.

“For years, photo-realistic Virtual Production has been constrained by time-intensive 3D creation workflows and the need for highly specialized modeling and optimization skills,” said Michael Geissler, CEO of Mo-Sys Engineering. “Our new scanning workflow changes all that. By making more realistic content creation accessible to in-house teams, we are delivering on the promise of Virtual Production and empowering creators to bring their visions to life faster and more believably than ever before.”

Linda Lim, CEO of Studio X Beyond, added: “At Studio X Beyond, speed and scale are part of our DNA — but this breakthrough workflow takes it to another level. We delivered a global production in days, not weeks, because with Virtual Production, the location really does come to us.”

Mo-Sys will demonstrate the ‘Scan-to-Shoot’ workflow at NAB Show 2025 (booth N3039, North Hall) from April 6th-9th, with workshops and presentations.
