MSNBC has announced the cancellation of Joy Reid’s daily show, "The ReidOut". The show, which premiered in 2020, will end the week of February 23, 2025, according to a New York Times report. Sources inside the network attribute the decision to a significant drop in ratings—more than 50%—since the 2024 election.
Reid, a prominent critic of Donald Trump, is one of several MSNBC anchors affected by recent changes at the network. This marks the first major programming shift since Rebecca Kutler became president of MSNBC earlier in February 2025, succeeding Rashida Jones, who stepped down in January 2025. Before Kutler's appointment, MSNBC reportedly discussed contract renewals with several anchors, suggesting potential pay cuts to reduce costs.
The network's financial challenges mirror those in the broader news industry. MSNBC is also facing the added complexity of its impending spin-off from Comcast, along with other cable properties later in 2025. While some viewer numbers have rebounded after the election, MSNBC is reportedly working to refine its focus audience during Trump's second term.
Replacing "The ReidOut" will be a new panel show featuring Alicia Menendez, Michael Steele, and Symone Sanders Townsend, currently hosts of MSNBC’s weekend program, “The Weekend”. The format of the new show is expected to be panel-based, but its name remains unconfirmed. The future of the weekend slot previously occupied by “The Weekend” is currently unclear.
Sanders-Townsend previously worked on Joe Biden’s 2020 presidential campaign and served as a spokesperson for Vice President Kamala Harris. Menendez is the daughter of former Democratic Senator Bob Menendez, who resigned from the Senate in 2024. Steele, a former chair of the Republican National Committee, has become a vocal critic of Trump.
