To enhance viewer understanding of the traditionally private papal conclave, several major news networks turned to extended reality (XR) technology. NBC News and CNN both created immersive virtual recreations of the Sistine Chapel, using them in explainer segments to illustrate the papal election process. Both incorporated floating informational panels detailing the proceedings, resulting in visually similar presentations, likely due to the chapel's extensive documentation. However, NBC's version showcased a richer visual aesthetic, while CNN's included virtual figures of cardinals seated within the chapel. Both also integrated exterior views of the Vatican.
CNN's visualization made more pronounced use of the chapel's famed vaulted ceilings, employing wider shots that highlighted the room's height and frescoes. The segments from both CNN and MSNBC appeared pre-produced; whether these virtual spaces will be used live or again in future broadcasts remains unclear.
Meanwhile, CBS leveraged its virtual production capabilities differently. They integrated their on-air talent into a circular virtual set, frequently used for weather segments, creating a less extensive virtual recreation of the setting. Yet, this virtual studio still served to illustrate the conclave process. Imagery and a map were projected onto the virtual walls and floor, respectively.
