NewsNation is expressing concern over a Fox News Channel (FNC) Super Bowl promo that bears resemblance to its "News for All America" tagline. The promo, aired during Super Bowl LIX on February 9, 2025, featured phrases like "For all" combined with visuals. The final phrase, "For all America," is strikingly similar to NewsNation's established tagline. While FNC's version omits the word "news," the similarity is undeniable.
A trademark search revealed Nexstar, NewsNation's parent company, doesn't hold a registered trademark for "News for All America," despite using it since 2021. Legal experts note that trademarks don't require registration for protection, but it's best practice for major brands. The key legal question revolves around whether the two taglines are likely to cause consumer confusion.
NewsNation anchor Chris Cuomo addressed the situation on his show, "Cuomo," a clip of which was incorporated into a NewsNation promo. This promo highlighted the similarity, stating "A tagline so good…" and featuring Cuomo's commentary. It further asserted, "It’s easy to talk the talk… Because only one network walks the walk." The promo used the "Americans" variation of the tagline, a point considered largely irrelevant given NewsNation's use of both variations.
NewsNation itself has borrowed from other sources. Its morning show, "Morning in America" (a registered trademark), drew comparisons to a Ronald Reagan campaign ad. This was seemingly reinforced by a NewsNation promo featuring Reagan quotes alongside those of other presidents. Before adopting the "America" tagline, NewsNation used "Your news. Your nation." and "News not talk. Facts not opinion."
These older taglines better reflected the network's initial three-hour primetime format. After Nexstar rebranded WGN America as NewsNation and expanded to 24/7 coverage, the network incorporated more panel discussions and interviews. Despite this shift, NewsNation continues to market itself as "unbiased." FNC has yet to respond to inquiries about the promo.
