Tegna has announced a major expansion of its local news offerings, adding two hours of morning news to its streaming, connected TV, and website platforms. “Local news drives daily decisions,” stated Adrienne Roark, Tegna’s Chief Content Officer, in a press release. “With this new programming, our audiences will have the option to watch live news from their trusted stations during a time when local coverage has been largely unavailable.”

This expansion will provide new advertising opportunities and reach viewers across multiple platforms. Tegna stations in over 50 markets will launch a 7 to 9 a.m. block of live and on-demand local news programming in the coming months. The company expects to deliver over 100 hours of daily local news coverage, potentially reaching 100 million viewers.

“This content expansion reinforces our commitment to local news,” Roark added, expressing confidence in strengthening newsrooms and enhancing viewer experience. The launch follows successful trials at stations like KGW (Portland), WCNC (Charlotte), and WKYC (Cleveland). 35 markets are slated for summer 2025 launch, expanding to over 50 by fall.

Viewers can access the streams via apps on Roku, Amazon Fire TV, and Apple TV, or directly through station websites. Select markets will also offer the programming on digital subchannels. Tegna will utilize its existing “plus” branding for streaming. This initiative represents a significant step in Tegna’s strategy to enhance its streaming presence and follows Roark's appointment after her departure from CBS News.
